Tony Page
Tutor: Poetry Across the Centuries
Melbourne born in 1952, Tony has wide experience as a teacher, writer and director. In 2012, he returned from 20 years in Southeast Asia, where he was Head of Performing Arts at an international school and encountered students of many ages and nationalities. He has mounted productions of Shakespeare, Beckett and Brecht, among others, in addition to writing several plays himself.
Tony has also been publishing poetry since the early 1980s in numerous literary magazines within Australia and overseas. He has five books to his credit: They’re Knocking At My Door (1986), Satellite Link (1992), Gateway to the Sphinx (2004), Who Killed Caravaggio (2015), and most recently in 2016, Dawn the Proof. An avid performer of his work, he has read from them at most of the established venues around Melbourne, in addition to appearances at the Edinburgh Arts Festival, Shakespeare & Co in Paris, Venice Commonwealth Literature Conference, Malaysia, Thailand and in the USA.
During his 30-year teaching career, he devised methods for making poetry open and accessible to all, no matter what the student's previous background.
Tony has been a tutor at the U3A Melbourne City branch since February 2012
