In the United States, he covered several presidential elections and wrote about major events in American history, including the impeachment of President Bill Clinton and the near-impeachment of Richard Nixon. He traveled extensively in all 50 states covering stories ranging from New York City's near bankruptcy in the 1970s to earthquakes in California in 1994. Bill retired Sept. 6, 2001 and, with his wife, Alma, moved to Melbourne, in order to live closer to their daughter and grandchildren. The Claibornes became Australian citizens on Jan. 26, 2004. Bill began tutoring U3A courses in Hawthorn in 2003 and later at Melbourne City U3A when he and Alma moved to North Carlton.
