Currently Tutoring In: Public Speaking
Robert is a semi-retired Customs Officer with a passion for “communication, media and observing the many ways humans interact”.
His interest in “people watching” was certainly acquired from his long career as a Customs Officer, spent working at the Melbourne Waterfront and the International Airport at Tullamarine.
Joining The Australian Customs Service as a shy and green 21 year old “boy” saw him complete his career as a very confident and more “worldly man”, having worked in uniform enforcement roles at the Sea And Airports, Investigations, Covert Surveillance, as a Dog Handler and finally in the training and development of new Customs Recruits at Melbourne Airport.
The training involved presenting courses in Effective Communication skills, Assertiveness, Client Service Skills, Handling Difficult People and Confident Public Speaking. Robert was always mindful to stress to new trainees the unique role Customs Officers have in being the first “face” a visitor to Australia meets and the opportunity to make a “positive and friendly ” impression.
He still works casually with Australian Customs at the National Dog Breeding Centre at Tullamarine, helping to train new “canine” Customs Officers.
Robert’s interests include travel, wine appreciation, classical and jazz music, volunteering with Vision Australia Radio and of course continuing his “people watching“.
New to U3A, having been recommended to join by a friend, he is impressed with the range of subjects offered, the vast and interesting life experiences the participants bring and the warm social get-togethers.
